Georgeanna L. Hardesty, Sabrina L. Harris Obituary, Death – Two people lost their lives in a crash on Interstate 64 in Augusta County on the morning of July 22, according to Virginia State Police. The incident occurred around 6:19 a.m. near mile marker 89 when a 2026 Freightliner TMA crash truck, which is typically used to safeguard construction zones and motorists, veered off the road. The truck was headed eastbound on I-64 when the driver reportedly overcorrected, causing the vehicle to lose control.

As a result of the sudden maneuver, the truck ran off the right side of the interstate, broke through a guardrail, descended an embankment, struck a tree, and eventually overturned onto its side. The violent impact caused fatal injuries to both individuals inside the vehicle.

Virginia State Police confirmed that the driver, 51-year-old Georgeanna L. Hardesty of Iron Gate, and the passenger, 50-year-old Sabrina L. Harris of Covington, died at the scene. Investigators noted that both victims were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Authorities have not yet determined the exact reason for the driver’s loss of control and say the incident is still under active investigation.

This fatal crash adds to ongoing concerns about safety in highway work zones, even when vehicles like TMA trucks are employed to reduce risk. TMA (Truck Mounted Attenuator) vehicles are specially designed to absorb impacts and protect both roadway workers and passing drivers, but in this case, the crash truck itself became the subject of tragedy.

Police have not released any further details regarding road conditions, weather factors, or whether mechanical failure played a role in the accident. Investigators are expected to continue examining all potential contributing factors.

Virginia State Police extended condolences to the families of Hardesty and Harris and emphasized the importance of safe driving practices, especially when traveling near construction or maintenance areas on the highway.

No additional vehicles were reported to be involved in the crash, and no other injuries were sustained.

Further updates may be released as the investigation progresses.
