Dorothy Kent Obituary, Death – A 76-year-old woman has died after being struck by a vehicle in Bloomington on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 5. Bloomington police responded to a report of a vehicle-pedestrian collision at the intersection of West Third Street and South Liberty Drive around 4 p.m. When officers arrived, they found members of the Bloomington Fire Department already on scene, working to free the pedestrian, who had become trapped beneath a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
After emergency crews successfully extricated the woman, she was immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment. Sadly, she later succumbed to her injuries. Authorities identified the victim as Dorothy Kent, a 76-year-old resident of Bloomington.
According to statements provided at the scene, the 77-year-old woman driving the Jeep told police that she had been traveling northbound on Liberty Drive and was attempting to make a left turn onto westbound Third Street. The driver explained that the traffic light turned yellow, and after determining there was no oncoming traffic, she began her turn. She told officers she suddenly felt her vehicle collide with something, but claimed she did not see Kent in the roadway.
Police said the driver did not appear impaired at the time of the crash. No signs of intoxication or impairment were observed during their initial assessment.
Eyewitnesses at the scene offered additional details, stating that they saw Kent walking northbound across Third Street on the west side of the intersection. As she began crossing into the westbound lanes, the Jeep began its turn from Liberty Drive and struck her.
An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of Kent’s death. The investigation remains active as police continue to review the circumstances leading to the crash.
Authorities have not announced whether any charges will be filed and are asking anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward.
