Southwest Charlotte, NC.(SOCIETY ALERT) – A woman lost her life after being struck by a vehicle in southwest Crlotte on Monday afternoon, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. Authorities reported that officers were dispatched to the scene of a crash at 3:14 p.m. on September 15. The collision happened along Clanton Road near the intersection with Fieldcrest Road, an area known for both residential and commuter traffic.

When officers arrived, they found a woman lying unresponsive in the roadway. Emergency responders attempted to assist, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Police later identified the victim as 65-year-old Meta Howze King.

Also at the scene was a truck pulling a trailer, which had stopped following the crash. Police confirmed that the driver of the truck remained on site and cooperated with officers during the initial investigation. There were no reports of the driver attempting to flee or avoid authorities.

At this stage of the investigation, police said no charges have been filed against the driver. Officials did not immediately release details about what caused the collision or whether speed, distraction, or impairment may have been factors. Investigators will continue reviewing the circumstances of the crash to determine responsibility, if any.

The incident marks yet another tragic pedestrian death in the Charlotte area, highlighting ongoing concerns about pedestrian safety in busy parts of the city. Clanton Road, where the crash occurred, is a stretch that combines both neighborhood access and commuter traffic, which can create challenges for people walking nearby.

Neighbors in the area have previously voiced concerns about traffic conditions along that road. While it is not clear whether crosswalks or traffic signals were located near the site of Monday’s accident, pedestrian safety advocates often emphasize the risks when crossing busy streets without designated walkways.

Authorities have not released further information about King’s movements before the crash or whether she had been attempting to cross the street. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s crash investigation unit is handling the case and will evaluate witness statements, vehicle data, and any potential camera footage from the area to better understand what happened.

As is standard in fatal crash investigations, police are expected to submit findings to the district attorney’s office once the review is complete. At that point, prosecutors will determine if criminal charges or citations are warranted. For now, police have only confirmed that the driver has not been charged.

King’s death adds to a troubling trend of fatal pedestrian crashes across the state. Data from recent years has shown an increase in such accidents, often linked to higher traffic volumes and limited pedestrian infrastructure. While investigators have not determined the exact circumstances of this crash, the tragedy underscores the vulnerability of pedestrians when sharing roads with larger vehicles.

The Charlotte community now mourns the loss of Meta Howze King, as police continue piecing together details about the events that led to her death. For the time being, the case remains an open investigation, and officials are asking anyone with information to contact the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
