HOKE COUNTY, N.C. – Authorities have released more information regarding a tragic incident in Hoke County that resulted in the deaths of two individuals and led to an investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies across North Carolina.

According to a report from the Hoke County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), deputies were dispatched at approximately 6:04 p.m. on October 27 to a residence located at 1696 Cope Road in Raeford. The initial call was made regarding a possible cardiac emergency. Upon arrival, deputies discovered two adults who had passed away inside the home. Detectives were immediately called to the scene to begin an investigation into what was determined to be a homicide case.

The victims were later identified as 46-year-old Joann Nicole Chavis and 53-year-old Matthew Chavis, both residents of Red Springs, North Carolina. According to the sheriff’s office, both victims sustained multiple injuries that led to their deaths. Investigators soon identified a person of interest — the couple’s 17-year-old foster child, referred to in reports as D.P.

Law enforcement officials began a coordinated search for the teenager, working closely with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), and the Lake Waccamaw Police Department. The joint effort eventually led authorities to Lake Waccamaw, where the teen was believed to have traveled after leaving the scene in a vehicle.

The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office later located the car near the Boys & Girls Homes of North Carolina campus in Lake Waccamaw. When authorities found D.P., they reported that he appeared to have taken his own life. The State Bureau of Investigation has since taken over the inquiry into that part of the case to ensure a full and independent review.

The sheriff’s office said that the investigation remains ongoing, with detectives continuing to collect evidence and conduct interviews to understand the circumstances leading up to the incident. Officials have not yet disclosed any details about a possible motive or the events that may have preceded the tragedy.

Anyone with information related to the case is encouraged to reach out to Detective D. Austin of the Hoke County Sheriff’s Office by calling (910) 875-5111. Investigators say that community assistance could be vital in piecing together the final moments before the incident occurred.

Hoke County Sheriff Roderick Virgil expressed his condolences to the families and friends of those involved, acknowledging the devastating impact on the community.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Chavis family and everyone affected by this tragic event,” Sheriff Virgil stated. “We are deeply appreciative of the support and cooperation from all partnering law enforcement agencies who assisted during this investigation.”

The HCSO also reminded the public that this case is still under active investigation, and updates will be released as new information becomes available. The sheriff’s office and other agencies involved are working to ensure that the full details are brought to light and that those affected receive the support and assistance they need during this difficult time.

The tragic incident has left the small community of Raeford in shock, with many residents expressing grief and disbelief. Local leaders and faith groups have reportedly come together to offer counseling and support to neighbors and loved ones mourning the loss of Joann and Matthew Chavis, who were described by acquaintances as kind and caring individuals devoted to family and community service.

As investigators continue their work, the sheriff’s office reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and thoroughness, emphasizing that their goal is to honor the memory of the victims by ensuring the facts are fully uncovered and justice is served.
