The Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office reported that the vehicle the two were traveling in went off the road and collided with a tree, resulting in a tragic and fatal outcome for the driver.
According to officials, the first indication that something was wrong came just before 11:45 p.m. on November 18, when the county’s 911 communications center received an automated iPhone crash alert near the intersection of Welch Road and Lane Road. These alerts are designed to notify emergency services when a significant impact is detected. Moments after the alert was registered, a caller phoned 911 to report a single-vehicle accident in the same area, confirming that something serious had occurred.
Deputies and emergency crews were immediately dispatched to the location. When they arrived, they found a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta that had suffered heavy damage after hitting a tree. Investigators later determined that the vehicle had been traveling north on Welch Road when it veered off the right-hand side of the pavement. The car then slid across a patch of wet grass before striking the tree near Lane Road. Weather and road surface conditions appear to have contributed to the vehicle’s loss of control, though the full circumstances are still being evaluated.
The driver of the Jetta was identified as 18-year-old Kyla Caudy of Lockbourne. First responders provided aid at the scene before she was transported to Mount Carmel Grove City Hospital. Despite the efforts of emergency crews and medical personnel, Caudy was pronounced dead at the hospital. A second occupant of the vehicle, identified only as a 19-year-old woman from Orient, survived the crash.
