Bravo Nondo – New York State Police have confirmed the identity of the individual who died in a fatal motor vehicle incident that occurred earlier this month along Interstate 87 in the Clarkstown area. Authorities also identified the driver involved in the crash, who was an off-duty law enforcement officer at the time of the incident.

According to state police, the crash happened in the early morning hours on a southbound section of the highway near an entrance ramp in the Nanuet area. Investigators said the victim had been traveling south when he stopped his vehicle along the ramp’s acceleration lane. For reasons that have not yet been determined, he exited his vehicle and went to the rear area before the collision occurred.

While the man was outside of his vehicle, another car entered the ramp while attempting to merge onto the southbound lanes of the highway. That vehicle struck the man, causing critical injuries. Emergency responders arrived quickly and attempted life-saving measures, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle, identified as an off-duty New York City police officer, was transported to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. Authorities have not released details about the extent of the driver’s injuries, and officials emphasized that the officer was not on duty at the time of the crash.

State police noted that crashes involving stopped vehicles on highway ramps can be especially dangerous, particularly during low-visibility conditions in the early morning hours. Investigators are examining whether lighting, roadway conditions, vehicle placement, or other factors may have contributed to the incident.

The investigation into the crash remains active and is being conducted with oversight from the New York State Attorney General’s Office. Officials stated that this step is standard procedure in cases involving law enforcement personnel to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the investigative process.

Authorities have not released information regarding potential charges or findings, noting that it is too early in the investigation to draw conclusions. Investigators are continuing to review evidence, including vehicle data, roadway markings, and witness accounts, to determine exactly how the crash unfolded.

Officials also reminded drivers of the dangers of stopping on highway ramps or travel lanes except in emergencies. Law enforcement agencies frequently advise motorists to remain inside their vehicles when stopped in high-speed areas whenever possible and to activate hazard lights while awaiting assistance.

The death has drawn attention to the risks faced by motorists on busy highways, especially during overnight and early morning hours when visibility may be reduced and traffic patterns can be unpredictable. Safety advocates often stress the importance of remaining alert when merging onto highways and exercising caution when encountering stopped vehicles.

State police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who may have relevant information to contact authorities. Investigators said witness accounts can be critical in reconstructing events and ensuring a complete understanding of what occurred. Officials emphasized that all information provided will be reviewed carefully as part of the ongoing investigation.

As the case continues, authorities have expressed condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim. The investigation remains open, and officials stated that additional updates will be shared if and when more information becomes available.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of how quickly routine travel can turn dangerous and underscores the importance of roadway safety for all drivers. Law enforcement agencies continue to encourage motorists to remain cautious, particularly when entering or exiting highways, and to prioritize safety at all times.
