Leonel Benavides, Jr – Authorities have identified the driver who died in a commercial vehicle collision that occurred Thursday morning in Temple. The individual was a 41-year-old man from Laredo who was operating a tractor-trailer at the time of the incident.

According to officials, the crash happened along the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 near the Midway Drive area. Traffic in that section of the highway had slowed and stopped due to an earlier incident farther ahead on the roadway. As conditions became congested, the semi-truck driven by the man struck the back of another commercial vehicle that was already stopped because of the traffic backup.

Emergency responders were called to the scene shortly after the collision was reported. Despite their efforts, the driver of the second semi was pronounced dead at the location. Authorities confirmed that no other individuals were hurt as a result of this specific crash.

The traffic congestion that led to the collision stemmed from a separate accident earlier that morning. That initial incident involved two passenger vehicles and resulted in one fatality. Officials said the first crash caused significant delays, leading to stopped traffic along the interstate and contributing to the conditions that preceded the later collision involving the commercial trucks.

Law enforcement and transportation officials worked to secure the area, investigate the circumstances of both crashes, and manage traffic flow. Portions of the highway were impacted for several hours as crews conducted their work and cleared the roadway to allow traffic to safely resume. Drivers in the area experienced delays during the investigation and cleanup process.

At this time, authorities have not released additional details about the factors that may have contributed to the crash, and the incident remains under review. Investigators typically examine roadway conditions, vehicle operation, and other relevant factors when determining how such events occur.

Officials are reminding motorists to remain alert when traveling through areas affected by congestion or emergency activity, especially on major highways. Sudden slowdowns and stopped traffic can pose serious risks, particularly for large vehicles that require more distance to safely come to a stop.

The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by drivers on busy roadways and the importance of caution during periods of heavy traffic or unexpected delays. Authorities continue to encourage drivers to follow posted signs, reduce speed when approaching congested areas, and remain attentive to changing road conditions.

Further updates may be released once the investigation is complete.
