According to Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III, the incident began on January 30 along Route 18 North. Officials said a vehicle driven by 23-year-old Ruby Quiro Santos of New Bedford became disabled while traveling in the left lane of the roadway. The situation prompted a response from passing motorists and local law enforcement.
Prosecutors stated that a second vehicle stopped nearby to provide assistance, and two New Bedford police cruisers also arrived at the scene to help manage the situation and ensure safety. At some point after these vehicles had stopped, Santos and another woman were outside and moving toward the nearby vehicles when another car entered the area and struck them. The vehicle then continued on and made contact with additional vehicles at the scene, including one of the police cruisers.
Emergency responders were quickly dispatched, and all individuals involved were taken to area hospitals for medical evaluation and treatment. The district attorney’s office confirmed that Santos later died from her injuries on January 31. Her death has deeply affected family members, friends, and the New Bedford community.
