PORTLAND, OREGON — Police have identified the man who died during a police shooting last week as a 57-year-old Portland resident, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

Authorities said the incident occurred on February 5 as officers were serving an arrest warrant at an apartment in the Pearl District. The warrant stemmed from an earlier investigation connected to an incident reported on January 31 at a grocery store in northeast Portland.

According to police, investigators believe the man was involved in a confrontation at the store in which he allegedly misrepresented himself as a federal agent and threatened a uniformed security guard with a firearm. Authorities stated that the weapon did not discharge, and the individual fled the scene following a brief struggle with security personnel.

Police said officers later recovered an item left behind at the grocery store that contained a firearm. The weapon was seized as evidence, and investigators reviewed materials associated with it as part of their inquiry. Based on the evidence gathered, detectives identified the suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest, authorities said.

Last week, tactical officers went to the man’s apartment to serve the warrant. Police officials said officers attempted to resolve the situation through communication and negotiation. When those efforts were unsuccessful, officers used gas in an effort to bring the situation to a close and have the suspect exit the apartment safely.

According to police, when the man came out of the apartment, he was holding a handgun. Officers reported that two officers then fired their weapons, striking the suspect. Emergency medical aid was rendered, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The Portland Police Bureau emphasized that the officers involved were responding to what they described as an immediate threat. As with all officer-involved shootings, the incident is now under investigation to determine the full sequence of events and whether police actions followed department policies and state law.

Officials said the investigation will include a review of body-worn camera footage, witness statements, and physical evidence. The case will also be reviewed by outside agencies, as required, to ensure transparency and accountability.

Police leaders expressed that such incidents are taken seriously and acknowledged the impact officer-involved shootings have on families and the broader community. Authorities asked the public to allow investigators time to complete a thorough and independent review before drawing conclusions.

The name of the individual was released after notification of next of kin, police said. Officials did not release additional personal details and asked that the family’s privacy be respected during this time.

Community members were reminded that investigations of this nature can take time and that updates will be shared as verified information becomes available. Police encouraged residents to rely on official statements for accurate details and to avoid speculation.

The Portland Police Bureau said it remains committed to public safety while also ensuring that critical incidents involving officers are examined carefully and openly. Additional information is expected to be released once investigators complete initial findings and required reviews.

Authorities reiterated that anyone with information relevant to the case is encouraged to contact law enforcement. Updates will continue to be provided through official channels as the investigation progresses.
