The Salt Lake City Police Department has identified the driver who died in a single-vehicle crash Sunday morning as 62-year-old Robert “Jay” Hill.
According to police, Hill was a sergeant with the Utah Department of Corrections. Authorities confirmed that he was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash.
In a statement released by SLCPD, detectives said they believe Hill was ejected from the vehicle and died prior to the arrival of first responders. Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 7:26 a.m. after a citizen reported a crash near the intersection of 8000 West and 700 North.
Sgt. Blue of SLCPD told local media that the driver had been traveling southbound on 8000 West when the vehicle left the roadway for reasons that remain under investigation. Officers arriving at the scene confirmed that the driver had been pronounced deceased.
Authorities have not released additional details about what may have led to the vehicle leaving the roadway. Investigators with the department’s Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Team are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Police indicated that determining the exact cause will require further review of physical evidence, roadway conditions, and other relevant factors. No other vehicles were reported to be involved in the incident.
The Salt Lake City Police Department extended condolences to Hill’s family, colleagues, and friends. Officials also acknowledged his service with the Utah Department of Corrections.
The investigation remains active, and additional information will be released as it becomes available through official channels.
