Wilbur Haile Hayes IV, Pickens County Coroner Identifies Victim in New Year’s Day Crash in Pendleton.

The Pickens County Coroner’s Office has identified the individual who died in a single-vehicle crash that occurred shortly after midnight on January 1 in Pendleton.

According to the coroner’s office, emergency responders were called to West Queen Street around 12:15 a.m. following reports of a vehicle accident. Upon arrival, first responders found the vehicle heavily damaged and on fire.

Officials stated that one occupant was located inside the vehicle during firefighting efforts. No other individuals were reported to be involved in the incident.

Following standard identification procedures, the coroner’s office conducted a dental comparison to confirm the victim’s identity. The individual was identified as Wilbur Haile Hayes IV, of Anderson.

Authorities have ruled the manner of death accidental.

Investigators have not released additional details regarding the circumstances that led to the crash. As with similar incidents, officials are expected to review evidence from the scene, including roadway conditions and vehicle factors, to better understand the events surrounding the accident.

The coroner’s office expressed appreciation for the coordinated response of emergency personnel who assisted at the scene. No further information has been made available at this time.
