An inmate at the Alcorn County Jail was found unresponsive Tuesday morning, according to local officials. Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office said jail staff discovered the individual during routine cell checks at approximately 6:30 a.m.

The inmate was later identified by Jay Jones, Alcorn County Coroner, as 60-year-old Milton Still Jr.

Authorities reported that jailers immediately began life-saving efforts after finding the inmate unresponsive. Emergency medical personnel responded to the facility and, after assessment, confirmed that the individual had passed away.

According to the sheriff’s office, the inmate was housed alone in a single-occupancy cell at the time he was discovered. No additional details about the circumstances surrounding the incident have been released.

The case has been turned over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, which will conduct an independent review of the incident. Officials said this is standard procedure in cases involving in-custody deaths.

In addition, a medical examination will be conducted to determine the official cause and manner of death. Authorities have not indicated whether foul play is suspected, and no further information is available at this time.

The investigation remains ongoing. Officials say updates will be provided as more details are confirmed.
