Jackson County authorities are investigating a serious crash that occurred Wednesday on Interstate 10 involving a prisoner transport van and a utility truck.

According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the westbound van, operated by the St. Joseph Detention Center in Daytona, Florida, was carrying two staff members and two inmates. The driver of the van, 32-year-old Michael Valera, and one of the inmates, 34-year-old William Rodman, were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Another staff member, 27-year-old Javier Arroyo, and the second inmate, 29-year-old Raymond Boertmann, sustained life-threatening injuries and were airlifted to an out-of-state hospital for treatment.

The utility truck involved in the collision was driven by 54-year-old Jerry Jenkins of Gautier, who sustained serious injuries and was transported by ambulance.

Authorities say the crash occurred when the van collided with the utility truck, causing the van to leave the roadway, overturn, and catch fire. Emergency responders from the Mississippi Highway Patrol and other agencies quickly arrived on scene to assist.

Officials emphasize that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is reviewing all aspects of the incident to determine the cause and contributing factors.
