Authorities have released the names of two drivers who died following a wrong-way collision on US 60 in Tempe early Sunday morning.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS), the crash occurred shortly after 1 a.m. on the US 60 transition ramp to Broadway Road near Interstate 10. Investigators say a 2010 Infiniti G37 coupe was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes when it collided head-on with a 2017 Toyota Prius.
DPS identified the driver of the Infiniti as 22-year-old Jake Brian Bowen of Queen Creek. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Toyota Prius, identified as 38-year-old Abu Sayed Bin Abuya of Phoenix, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
No other injuries were reported in connection with the crash.
Officials say preliminary findings indicate that impairment is believed to have been a factor in the collision. However, investigators continue to review evidence and gather additional information as part of the ongoing investigation.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety emphasized that wrong-way crashes are among the most dangerous types of traffic incidents due to the high speeds and limited reaction time involved. Authorities continue to encourage drivers to remain alert, avoid impaired driving, and immediately report suspected wrong-way vehicles to law enforcement.
Motorists traveling in the area at the time experienced temporary traffic disruptions as crews responded to the scene and conducted their investigation. Roadways were later reopened once it was safe to do so.
Officials remind drivers to plan ahead, use designated drivers when necessary, and make responsible choices behind the wheel to help prevent similar tragedies.
The investigation remains active, and additional details may be released as they become available. Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to contact the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
