Authorities say a deputy with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office has died following a motor vehicle crash early Saturday while on duty.
Officials confirmed that Deputy Kaleb Mitchell lost his life in the incident while “serving and protecting” the community. The sheriff’s office shared the news in a statement but did not release additional details about how the crash occurred.
“We ask for prayers from the community for his family as well as our sheriff’s office family,” the agency said.
Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough Jr. described Mitchell’s service as an example of dedication to the community. In a public statement, the sheriff reflected on the sacrifices law enforcement officers make, saying Mitchell represented the spirit of service and commitment to others.
Deputy Mitchell began his law enforcement career with the King Police Department in 2022. According to Assistant Police Chief Ian Tedder, he joined the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office in the spring of 2025.
Tedder said Mitchell was widely respected by colleagues and known for his professionalism and willingness to help others.
North Carolina Governor Josh Stein also issued a statement following the news, noting that law enforcement officers place themselves in harm’s way to keep communities safe. Stein said he spoke with Sheriff Kimbrough and offered the state’s support during the difficult time.
The tragedy comes as the sheriff’s office continues to remember another deputy lost in the line of duty in 2023. Deputy Auston Smith Reudelhuber died after his patrol vehicle was involved in a crash in neighboring Davidson County.
Authorities say the loss of Deputy Mitchell is deeply felt among colleagues and community members alike.
As tributes continue to come in, many are remembering his commitment to service and the impact he had on those who worked alongside him.
Community members are now sharing condolences and honoring the deputy’s dedication to public safety. How should communities recognize the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers?
