Authorities have charged a man in connection with the decease of a Grand Rapids landlord following a Monday afternoon incident.
Najee Franklin, 33, has been charged with open murder and assault with a dangerous weapon after police say Vincenzo Palmeri, 53, died outside a home on Palmer Street near Coit Avenue on March 9. The Bergen County Medical Examiner ruled Palmeri’s death a homicide.
According to court documents, the dispute began when Franklin attempted to enter the residence through a back window. When a key did not work, he reportedly tried the door, leading to an argument with a tenant. The tenant then called Palmeri, the homeowner, to report the situation.
Authorities say that when Palmeri arrived, the confrontation escalated outside the home. Police reports indicate a struggle occurred on the front porch and yard. Responding officers quickly secured the scene, rendered aid to Palmeri, and arrested Franklin. Interim Chief Joe Trigg praised officers for their actions, noting that they worked to keep neighbors safe while providing immediate medical attention.
Court records and surveillance footage indicate that during the altercation, Franklin allegedly struck Palmeri with a baseball bat. A neighbor who attempted to intervene was unable to stop the incident. Franklin also allegedly struck the tenant before officers arrived.
