Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that left two men dead Tuesday at a home in Eastman, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
Investigators said law enforcement officers responded to a residence in the 3400 block of Eastman Dublin Highway after receiving reports of a shooting. When authorities arrived at the home, they discovered a man inside who had died from a gunshot injury. The GBI later identified the victim as 48-year-old Jonathan Groves of Eastman.
During their investigation of the property, officials also located a second individual in a wooded area near the home. Authorities identified that man as 60-year-old Rex Giddens. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene, according to investigators. In a statement, the GBI said preliminary findings suggest that Giddens shot Groves during the incident before leaving the residence and going into the nearby wooded area, where investigators believe he died from a self-inflicted gunshot injury.
Officials emphasized that the case remains under investigation as detectives continue to review evidence and gather information about the circumstances surrounding the incident. As part of the investigative process, both men will undergo autopsies at the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office. Authorities say the examinations will help determine the official causes and manner of decease.
Law enforcement agencies often conduct thorough reviews in cases involving fatal shootings to better understand the sequence of events and confirm the facts surrounding the incident. Investigators may examine evidence from the scene, interview witnesses, and review any available records or information that could provide additional context.
Officials have not released further details about what may have led to the shooting, and they say the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities are encouraging anyone who may have information related to the case to contact the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Eastman. Investigators say community cooperation can play an important role in helping them fully understand what occurred.
