According to Laurel County Sheriff John Root, the incident involved a side-by-side utility vehicle that overturned along U.S. 25 in London, Kentucky. Deputies responded to the scene around 6:45 a.m. after receiving reports of a crash.

Officials said the driver, identified as 20-year-old Dennis Johnson III, was traveling south on U.S. 25 when the vehicle crossed the centerline. Authorities reported that the side-by-side then struck a roadside culvert and overturned.

Emergency responders arrived shortly after the crash was reported. The Laurel County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said Johnson was the only person inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. Deputies confirmed there were no passengers and no other individuals were injured in the incident.

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities have not released additional details about what may have led the vehicle to cross the centerline.

Side-by-side vehicles, often used for off-road travel, farm work, and recreational purposes, have become increasingly common in rural communities. While they are designed for rugged terrain, safety experts say operating these vehicles on public roadways can present additional risks due to differences in speed, stability, and road conditions.

Local officials often remind drivers to remain alert while traveling on rural highways and to follow safety recommendations when operating specialty vehicles. These precautions can include maintaining appropriate speeds, wearing safety equipment when available, and being mindful of roadway hazards.

Crashes involving smaller utility vehicles can sometimes occur quickly, especially on roads where conditions change or obstacles are present. Authorities emphasize the importance of cautious driving and awareness of surroundings, particularly during early morning hours when visibility and road conditions may vary.

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing as deputies continue reviewing the details of the crash.

Community members have also expressed condolences to the family and loved ones affected by the tragedy, as the loss of a young life has deeply impacted many in the area.
