Authorities in Oregon are investigating a serious two-vehicle crash that left one person dead and three others with significant injuries Saturday evening in Clackamas County.
According to the Oregon State Police, the collision was reported around 5:45 p.m. on Highway 26 near milepost 31, close to the Cherryville Drive intersection. Emergency crews were dispatched to the area after reports of a major crash involving two vehicles.
Preliminary information from investigators indicates that a vehicle driven by 35-year-old Heath Beardmore of Rhododendron crossed into the westbound lane of Highway 26. Officials say the vehicle then collided with a Honda Accord traveling in the opposite direction.
The Honda was being driven by 19-year-old Kailee Peterson of Gresham. Authorities reported that the crash resulted in serious injuries for several people involved in the incident.
Beardmore, Peterson, and a passenger in the Honda identified as 20-year-old Kemper Michael Buchholtz of Sandy were all transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials said they were reported to have sustained serious injuries, though there has been no immediate update on their conditions.
Tragically, another passenger in the Honda, 24-year-old Austin Rylee Buchholtz of Corbett, was pronounced dead at the scene by responding authorities.
Following the crash, Highway 26 was closed for approximately five hours while investigators examined the scene and emergency crews worked to clear the roadway. Traffic in the area was diverted during that time as crews carried out their response and investigation.
Oregon State Police said several agencies assisted at the scene, including the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, Clackamas Fire and Rescue, Hoodland Fire and Rescue, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
Officials noted that investigations into collisions of this nature typically involve reviewing roadway conditions, vehicle positions, and other evidence to determine what may have contributed to the crash.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing as troopers continue working to establish the exact cause of the incident.
Highway 26 is a frequently traveled route for commuters and visitors in the region, and crashes involving vehicles crossing into opposing lanes can often have serious consequences due to the speed and force involved.
Safety experts often stress the importance of driver awareness, maintaining control of vehicles, and staying within designated lanes to help prevent collisions on busy highways.
