Authorities in St. Clair County have identified the man who lost his life in a tragic early morning incident along Interstate 64 near O’Fallon, as officials continue working to understand the circumstances surrounding the event.

The county coroner’s office confirmed the victim as 35-year-old Ethan Wood of Glen Carbon. According to preliminary reports, Wood was on foot in the westbound lanes of the interstate when he was struck by a passing semi-truck at approximately 7:15 a.m. on Friday.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene shortly after the incident was reported. Despite their response, Wood was pronounced dead at the location. Officials have not released additional details regarding why he was in the roadway at the time.

Illinois State Police responded to the scene and temporarily shut down westbound traffic along Interstate 64 for nearly two hours. The closure allowed investigators to conduct a detailed reconstruction of the incident, gather evidence, and document conditions at the site.

Motorists in the area experienced delays as crews worked to safely clear the roadway and complete initial investigative steps. Traffic flow was restored once authorities determined it was safe to reopen the lanes.

Investigators have not yet indicated whether any additional factors, such as visibility, road conditions, or driver response, may have contributed to the incident. No information has been released regarding potential citations or further action.

Authorities say the case remains under active investigation as officials continue to piece together what led to the fatal encounter on the busy interstate.

Officials are expected to review available evidence, including witness accounts and roadway data, as they work toward a clearer understanding of the events leading up to the incident.
