Authorities in Chicago are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred late Sunday night in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood, leaving a young man dead and raising fresh concerns about violence in the area.
According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), officers responded shortly after 11:30 p.m. to reports of gunfire in the 100 block of East 71st Street, near South Michigan Avenue. When they arrived, they found a 26-year-old man who had been seriously injured just outside a nearby restaurant.
Preliminary information indicates the man had been leaving the establishment when he noticed another individual nearby. Moments later, gunfire erupted. The victim attempted to flee the scene but collapsed a short distance away.
Emergency responders provided immediate medical assistance at the scene before transporting him to the University of Chicago Medical Center. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Police have not yet released the identity of the victim, pending notification of family members.
Investigators are continuing to piece together what led to the shooting, including reviewing surveillance footage from the area and speaking with potential witnesses. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive, and it remains unclear whether the victim was specifically targeted.
