Greta Lynette Pender-Ray, Brandi Jyasia Sherrod Obituary, Death- Two of the four victims in a deadly wrong-way crash in Wilson County have been identified by authorities. The North Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed that 53-year-old Greta Lynette Pender-Ray and 21-year-old Brandi Jyasia Sherrod were the driver and passenger in one of the vehicles involved. They were traveling in the correct direction on US 301 when the crash occurred.
The identities of the two individuals in the wrong-way vehicle have not been released yet. Investigators cited the intense fire that erupted following the crash as the reason for the delay in identifying the victims.
The incident took place around 4:50 p.m. on US 301 near Mobley Road, close to Lucama. According to the Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when one vehicle was traveling south in the northbound lane. The wrong-way vehicle caught fire upon impact, while the other vehicle overturned and veered off the right shoulder of the road. Tragically, all four individuals, two in each vehicle, were pronounced dead at the scene.
In response to the crash, Highway 301 was closed in both directions, and the road remained shut down until around 8:30 p.m. Local residents shared their concerns about the frequency of wrong-way drivers on that stretch of road. Amy Thompson, a local resident, recounted almost being hit by a wrong-way driver and expressed fear about the common occurrence. Jasmine Maull, another resident, explained how drivers often second-guess themselves when they see vehicles heading toward them on the wrong side of the road, even if the car is not yet in their lane.
The investigation into the crash is still ongoing, and authorities have not yet determined the cause of the wrong-way driving.
