The crash occurred just before 4 a.m. near exit 21, in the town of Catskill. According to State Police, their preliminary investigation revealed that a 2014 Subaru, traveling southbound, unexpectedly left the roadway and struck the median. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as 26-year-old Sara Llorens from Burlington, Vermont, exited her car after the collision, which then became engulfed in flames.

However, while Llorens had exited the vehicle, she was found later on the northbound shoulder of the Thruway, deceased. Investigators determined that Llorens had been struck by an unknown vehicle in the northbound lane after leaving her car. The collision caused her death, but the vehicle responsible for hitting her fled the scene, leaving the authorities with few clues to go on.

The crash shut down all lanes of the Thruway from about 4 a.m. until 6 a.m. on Wednesday morning, causing significant disruption to traffic during the investigation and cleanup. Initially, police had reported that the crash occurred in Athens, but on Thursday, they updated the location to Catskill and provided more details about the incident. The change in location helped clarify the scope of the investigation as authorities continued to piece together the events leading to Llorens’s tragic death.

The hit-and-run nature of the crash has prompted police to seek public assistance in identifying the driver responsible for striking Llorens.
