The events unfolded when a black Chevrolet 1500 crashed on the exit ramp overpass and became disabled, partially blocking the right lane. The driver of the Chevrolet was unable to move the vehicle, prompting another car to stop and assist. The passenger in that vehicle, 64-year-old Arbadellia Richardson of Old Hickory, attempted to help by warning oncoming traffic of the disabled vehicle. Using the flashlight on her phone, Richardson stood between the two vehicles in an effort to alert drivers to slow down and avoid the blocked lane.
Unfortunately, while she was in this position, Richardson was struck by an oncoming Toyota Corolla. The driver of the Corolla, a 25-year-old man, told officers that by the time he saw both the disabled Chevrolet and Richardson, he could not avoid the collision.
