Louisiana State Police are investigating a fatal crash in Iberville Parish that occurred when a man riding a bicycle collided with a vehicle on Monday evening, December 31. The victim has been identified as 26-year-old Davonte Russ, a resident of Plaquemine.
The crash took place shortly after 7:30 p.m. on LA 1, near Saint Louis Road. According to State Police, a 2018 Ford Focus was traveling northbound on LA 1 when Russ, who was riding his bicycle westbound, attempted to cross the highway. As he crossed, he struck the front of the Ford Focus.
Russ suffered severe injuries from the collision and was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, despite efforts to save him, he later died from his injuries.
The driver of the Ford Focus, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident, was unharmed in the crash.
State Police have confirmed that routine toxicology samples were taken from both parties involved for analysis, though no further details have been released regarding the outcome of the tests.
