The devastating wildfires sweeping through Los Angeles County have claimed at least 10 lives, with heartbreaking stories emerging about the victims. One of those killed was Victor Shaw, a 66-year-old resident of Pasadena, who was found clutching a garden hose, trying to protect his family home of over 50 years from the raging flames. His sister, Shari, recounted how Victor chose to stay behind Tuesday night to battle the fire, only for his body to be discovered the following day on the side of a road, hose in hand. Shari described his final moments as serene, as if he were at peace.

The wildfires, including the Palisades Fire, Eaton Fire, Kenneth Fire, Hurst Fire, and Lidia Fire, have collectively scorched over 30,000 acres. The Palisades Fire alone has burned nearly 20,000 acres and is only 6% contained. The fires have caused extensive damage, destroying over 10,000 homes and businesses.

As firefighters continue to battle the blazes, the Los Angeles Police Department arrested a man on Thursday for allegedly attempting to start a fire amidst the ongoing crisis. The full extent of the destruction is still being assessed, with Barbara Bruderlin, head of the Malibu Pacific Palisades Chamber of Commerce, describing the situation as “total devastation and loss.” In some areas, she noted, there’s nothing left but dirt, with not even a stick of wood remaining.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed 10 fire-related deaths, with five from the Eaton Fire and two from the Palisades Fire. Among those who perished in Altadena were Anthony Mitchell, a 67-year-old amputee, and his son Justin, who had cerebral palsy. The two were waiting for an ambulance but were unable to escape the fast-moving flames. Mitchell’s daughter, Hajime White, shared their tragic story with The Washington Post.

Another victim was Rodney Nickerson, an 83-year-old grandfather, whose body was found intact in his bed, surrounded by rubble and ash. His daughter, Kimiko, recounted the painful discovery to CBS News.

Erliene Kelley, a retired pharmacy technician and neighbor to Shaw and Nickerson, was also among those who lost their lives. Described as an angel by her neighbor Terry Pyburn, Kelley was remembered as the perfect neighbor who always brought a smile to those who knew her.

As the fires continue to rage, the community mourns the loss of these lives and the widespread destruction left in the fires’ wake. Authorities are still working to contain the blazes and support the affected communities.
