Ashley Vaia Obituary, Death – A tragic murder-suicide in Deltona has left a 38-year-old woman dead, with authorities identifying her ex-husband as the suspect.
According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office (VSO), the shooting occurred at 2:23 a.m. in the 3200 block of Parma Drive. The victim, Ashley Vaia, was discovered deceased inside her home by her child.
The suspect, 33-year-old Samuel Vaia, fled the scene but was located an hour later after crashing his vehicle in Flagler County. Deputies said he sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
Authorities stated that his white SUV was detected traveling north on Interstate 95 at speeds exceeding 100 mph. Law enforcement deployed stop sticks, which caused his vehicle to crash. At the time of his capture, Samuel Vaia was considered armed, dangerous, and was wearing body armor.
Previous Arrests and Domestic Violence History
This was not the first reported incident involving the couple. According to VSO, Samuel Vaia had been arrested just a week prior on battery charges related to Ashley Vaia.
On March 23, deputies responded to a domestic violence call at Ashley’s home. She had reported that her ex-husband entered her bedroom, took her phone, and accused her of infidelity. She also stated that they had been trying to reconcile, and he still had a key due to a time-sharing arrangement for their child.
Sheriff’s Statement on Domestic Violence
Sheriff Mike Chitwood expressed his condolences and warned of the dangers of escalating domestic violence.
“Our hearts go out to Ashley’s children, and all her family and friends who have to deal with losing her to such a senseless act of violence,” Chitwood said. “Time and time again, we see that domestic violence situations can escalate quickly and dangerously, with tragic consequences.”
