Marc Fogle Obituary, Death News – A man from Clackamas has been identified as the individual who was fatally stabbed by a Clark County Sheriff’s Office deputy following a suspected DUI-related crash late Thursday night.

According to the Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office, the man has been identified as 54-year-old Marc Fogle. Officials confirmed that Fogle died from multiple stab wounds to his torso.

The incident unfolded at approximately 10:58 p.m. on May 7, when Clark County deputies were dispatched to the scene of a vehicle collision near Northeast 14th Court and Northeast Minnehaha Street. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that a car had crashed into two parked vehicles. Authorities believed that the driver, later identified as Fogle, was under the influence at the time of the crash.

Following the crash investigation, deputies arrested Fogle and transported him to the Washington State Patrol Scale House located on Interstate 5 in Ridgefield. He arrived there around 11:33 p.m. The scale house includes a specialized room that contains a breath alcohol testing device. The sheriff’s office explained that it does not maintain its own breath test equipment, so deputies must use the facility in Ridgefield to conduct such tests when needed.

While inside the breath test room, a deputy transmitted an emergency radio call indicating that he was engaged in a violent struggle with the suspect. The deputy informed dispatch that Fogle had allegedly attempted to grab his firarm during the physical confrontation. In response, the deputy said he resorted to using a knife and stabbed Fogle multiple times.

After the altercation, deputies at the scene attempted to administer emergency medical care. First responders from Clark-Cowlitz Fire Rescue also arrived at the location in an attempt to revive Fogle. Despite their efforts, he was declared dead at the scene at approximately 12:39 a.m.

In the days following the fatal encounter, the deputy involved was publicly identified as Bryson Layton. Layton has been a member of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office since May 2023. He was not injured during the struggle with Fogle. Initially, Layton was placed on critical incident leave, a standard procedure following deadly force incidents. However, the sheriff’s office has since confirmed that he has returned to duty and is now back working on patrol.

Officials have stated that both body-worn camera footage and in-car video recordings exist and will be reviewed. These materials are expected to be released to the public at a later date, although no specific timeline has been provided.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office also emphasized that its personnel will not participate in the ongoing investigation into the use of deadly force. Instead, the case is being handled by the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations (OII). This agency was created specifically to investigate incidents involving the use of deadly force by law enforcement officers across the state. The OII operates independently of local police agencies in order to maintain transparency and avoid potential conflicts of interest.

As part of their investigation, OII is requesting the public’s assistance. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information that could be helpful to investigators is encouraged to come forward. The public can provide tips or information by calling 564-250-6275.

The sheriff’s office also noted that all information shared with OII is considered public record and is subject to disclosure under Washington’s Public Records Act (RCW 42.56). This ensures that the investigative process remains open to public scrutiny.

This case has drawn attention due to the nature of the confrontation and the use of deadly force while the suspect was in custody. The fact that the struggle occurred within a secure facility equipped for breath alcohol testing has raised questions about safety protocols and the handling of impaired suspects.

As the investigation continues, community members and advocacy groups may be closely watching for the release of bodycam footage and the results of the independent review. Law enforcement agencies across the country have faced increased scrutiny in recent years regarding use-of-force incidents, and transparency is expected to play a key role in public response to this case.

While many details remain under investigation, what is known so far paints a picture of a traffic-related arrest that escalated quickly into a deadly confrontation. Authorities are continuing to examine what led to the physical altercation and whether all procedures were followed in accordance with training and department policy.

As more information becomes available, the community is hoping for a thorough and impartial investigation that provides clarity, accountability, and transparency surrounding the circumstances of Marc Fogle’s death.
