At 6:17 a.m. on Saturday, police were dispatched following a report of an individual down on Second Avenue North at 11th Street. This location is situated beneath the Interstate 65 bridge, where some of the city’s homeless population resides. Officers arrived to discover Avila unresponsive with a gunshot wound. The Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead at the scene at 6:30 a.m.
Officer De’Rell Freeman indicated that the initial investigation points to two individuals being involved in a verbal dispute that originated at the Church of the Reconciler and escalated to the 1000 Block of Second Avenue North, where the victim sustained fatal injuries.
The Birmingham Police Department’s Crime Reduction Team responded to the incident, remained in the vicinity, and apprehended a person of interest without any complications.
