Victor Manuel Carillo Obituary, Death – A 27-year-old man was fatally shot by police in East Hollywood on Thursday morning, prompting a formal use-of-force investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department. The incident occurred after officers responded to reports of a suspected burglary in progress.
The man, later identified as Victor Manuel Carrillo, was reportedly attempting to break into apartments along the 500 block of North Alexandria Avenue, a location situated between the Hollywood (101) Freeway and Beverly Boulevard. Officers from LAPD’s Rampart Division were dispatched to the scene around 4:10 a.m., following a 911 call about the disturbance.
Upon arrival, officers located Carrillo near the second-floor entrance of an apartment complex. According to the LAPD, Carrillo began hurling various objects at the officers from his elevated position. These included lumber, ceramic pots, and other debris. Authorities stated that Carrillo was also armed with a knife during this encounter. In response to his actions, police deployed less-lethal munitions in an attempt to subdue him.
Carrillo fled from the entrance and allegedly forced his way through a window into a second-floor apartment, which was occupied at the time. The LAPD said officers then forced entry into the apartment in pursuit of the suspect. Inside, Carrillo reportedly confronted the officers while still armed—this time with both a knife and a metal chair. This confrontation escalated into an officer-involved shooting.
Police confirmed that Carrillo was hit by gunfire and subsequently taken into custody. Officers administered medical aid until emergency responders from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived. Despite efforts to save him, Carrillo was pronounced dead at the scene.
The LAPD did not disclose how many officers discharged their weapons, how many shots were fired, or how many times Carrillo was struck by bullets. These details remain part of the ongoing investigation.
One officer suffered a leg injury caused by the lumber Carrillo threw, but he declined medical treatment. Additionally, two civilians were slightly injured when Carrillo allegedly forced his way into their apartment. One received treatment on-site, while the other declined medical attention.
Police said that evidence recovered from the scene included the knife, the metal chair used during the confrontation, and pieces of lumber Carrillo had thrown. These items were all booked as part of the investigation.
The LAPD’s Force Investigation Division responded to the scene shortly after the incident and is leading the inquiry into the use of force. Their work will involve reviewing body camera footage, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing forensic evidence to determine whether the officers’ actions were justified under department policy and state law.
