Mikeal B. Copenhaver Obituary, Death – Kansas City police have launched a homicide investigation following a deadly shooting Thursday night that claimed the life of a 26-year-old man. The Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) has identified the victim as Mikeal B. Copenhaver, according to Sergeant Phil DiMartino.
The incident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. on June 20, when officers were dispatched to the 4300 block of Northern Avenue in response to reports of a disturbance in the area. As patrol units headed to the scene, dispatchers received additional 911 calls indicating that gunfire had been heard in the vicinity. Several callers reported hearing shots fired, and some stated that someone had possibly been shot.
Upon arrival at the scene, police were directed to the exterior of a nearby apartment complex. There, officers found a man later identified as Copenhaver, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel with the Kansas City Fire Department responded and attempted to provide aid. Unfortunately, Copenhaver was pronounced dead at the scene.
While investigating the area, officers discovered a second adult male who had also been wounded by gunfire. Unlike Copenhaver, this individual’s injuries were not life-threatening. He was treated by medics and then transported to a nearby hospital for further medical attention. His identity has not been released, and police have not provided details about his involvement in the incident.
Based on initial findings, investigators believe that a dispute occurred involving several individuals prior to the gunfire. The argument escalated quickly, resulting in shots being fired and ultimately leading to Copenhaver’s death. Authorities have not yet disclosed what may have sparked the conflict or whether any suspects have been identified or taken into custody.
