Vickram Roopnarine Obituary, Death Cause – The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man who tragically drowned in the Great Sacandaga Lake on Sunday, July 7. Authorities say 24-year-old Vickram Roopnarine of Schenectady died while trying to help another swimmer in distress.
The incident occurred near the Broadalbin Boat Launch, where Roopnarine was reportedly attempting to reach someone struggling near a water raft. According to deputies, during the effort, Roopnarine went underwater and never resurfaced.
Emergency crews were called to the scene Sunday evening after reports of a missing swimmer. Multiple rescue teams began searching the lake in the area surrounding the Broadalbin Boat Launch. Crews continued the search throughout the night, and shortly after 10 a.m. Monday, divers recovered Roopnarine’s body near the same location.
The initial response involved the Broadalbin-Kennyetto Fire Company, which helped set up staging areas at both the Broadalbin Boat Launch and the Sacandaga Boat Club. Divers and search teams from several agencies coordinated efforts to locate the missing swimmer.
Fulton County Sheriff Richard Giardino publicly expressed gratitude to local boaters who played a critical role in helping rescue the water raft and the other swimmer who had been struggling in the lake. Thanks to their efforts, that individual was safely brought to shore.
In addition to the Broadalbin-Kennyetto Fire Company, the response included several other agencies. The Tri-County Swift Water Rescue Team, Edinburg Volunteer Fire Company, Northville Fire Department, and Mayfield Fire Department all assisted in the extensive search and recovery mission.
The drowning has left the local community in shock, especially as Roopnarine is being remembered as a young man who lost his life while trying to help someone else in need. His selfless act has prompted an outpouring of condolences from residents of both Schenectady and Fulton County.
The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office has not released further information about the identity of the other swimmer involved or the conditions that led to the emergency. Authorities are urging anyone who visits the lake to use caution, wear life vests, and be aware of their swimming limits, especially in areas with strong currents or unpredictable water depths.
The Great Sacandaga Lake, a popular summer destination for boating and swimming, has seen previous drowning incidents, and law enforcement officials continue to stress the importance of water safety.
As the investigation into the exact circumstances continues, Roopnarine’s family and friends are left mourning a tragic and heroic loss. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
Sheriff Giardino commended the teamwork among rescue agencies and volunteers and reiterated the importance of quick response and cooperation during such emergencies. The Sheriff’s Office plans to review the incident to determine if any additional safety measures are needed in the area.
