Eli Tanner Obituary, Death – A devastating accident took the life of a 15-year-old boy in Coles County on Thursday afternoon when a side-by-side utility terrain vehicle (UTV) overturned. The Coles County Sheriff’s Office said they were dispatched to the area near 20940 East County Road 100 North around 2:57 p.m. in response to the crash.
Upon arrival, deputies found the teen driver, identified as Eli Tanner, who had suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Coles County Coroner later confirmed that Tanner died as a result of blunt force trauma.
Investigators revealed that Tanner had not been wearing a seat belt when the accident occurred. This contributed to him being ejected from the UTV. After being thrown from the vehicle, it reportedly rolled over and landed on top of him, causing fatal injuries.
Officials are still investigating the circumstances that led to the crash. At this time, no further details have been shared regarding what may have caused the UTV to roll over. It is also unclear whether speed, terrain, or mechanical issues played a role.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information relevant to the investigation to come forward. The Coles County Sheriff’s Office and Coroner’s Office are working together to determine all the factors that contributed to the deadly accident.
Eli Tanner’s tragic death serves as a somber reminder of the importance of safety precautions when operating off-road vehicles. Law enforcement officials continue to emphasize the use of seat belts and other safety equipment in UTVs and similar recreational vehicles, particularly among young or inexperienced drivers.
No other injuries were reported in the incident. It is currently unknown whether anyone else was riding in the UTV at the time of the crash.
As the community mourns the loss of a young life, the investigation remains ongoing. Additional updates may be released once more information becomes available.
