Abdias Gabriel-Fernandez, Ruby Gabriel Obituary, Death – A devastating two-vehicle collision in Lancaster earlier this week claimed the lives of a family of three and left one child hospitalized in critical condition, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The tragic crash occurred at approximately 4:25 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2, at the intersection of State Route 138 and 110th Street West, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Antelope Valley.
Preliminary findings from the CHP’s investigation revealed that the family was traveling in a Chevrolet Colorado. As the vehicle accelerated from a stop sign at 110th Street West, it entered the eastbound lane of State Route 138 and collided with an oncoming Dodge Ram 3500. Authorities have not yet determined whether excessive speed or other factors played a role in causing the fatal crash.
Emergency personnel arrived quickly at the scene but found that three of the vehicle’s occupants—the parents and their 12-year-old daughter—had died on impact. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner identified the deceased as 38-year-old Vanessa Gonzalez-Gabriel, 49-year-old Abdias Gabriel-Fernandez, and 12-year-old Ruby Gabriel.
The sole survivor from the Chevrolet Colorado was a juvenile, whose identity has not been made public. According to officials, the child sustained serious injuries and was immediately transported to Antelope Valley Medical Center, where they underwent emergency surgery. No updates on the child’s condition have been released.
The driver of the Dodge Ram involved in the crash suffered only minor injuries and was also taken to Antelope Valley Medical Center for treatment. Officials did not report any additional passengers in the Dodge Ram.
Following the collision, State Route 138 was shut down in both directions from 110th Street West to 90th Street West for roughly four and a half hours as investigators worked at the scene. The closure allowed authorities to collect evidence and reconstruct the crash to better understand the sequence of events.
CHP investigators also reviewed video footage captured by a passing electric vehicle, which confirmed the preliminary timeline of the crash. The footage supported the CHP’s initial findings, and authorities concluded that no criminal charges would be filed in connection with the accident.
In a public statement, the California Highway Patrol’s Antelope Valley Area office extended heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of the victims. “All employees of the California Highway Patrol Antelope Valley Area office extend their deepest condolences to the family and friends of our community members during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read.
As the investigation continues, the community is mourning the loss of a family and hoping for the recovery of the surviving child. Authorities are expected to release more details as they become available and are reminding drivers to exercise caution on high-speed rural highways like State Route 138.
