Authorities in Columbus are investigating a late-night crash that claimed the life of an elderly pedestrian on the city’s north side.
According to the Columbus Division of Police, the incident happened just before 11 p.m. Sunday along Cleveland Avenue, north of Green Apple Avenue. Officers were called to the area after reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.
Police said 81-year-old Abduallahi Farah was crossing Cleveland Avenue outside of a marked crosswalk when he was hit by an SUV. The vehicle involved was identified as a Jeep Cherokee.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported Farah to Riverside Methodist Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite medical efforts, he died a short time later, authorities confirmed.
Investigators said the driver of the Jeep Cherokee, described as an adult, remained at the scene following the crash and cooperated with responding officers. Police have not announced any charges, and the circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.
Officials have not yet released additional details about what may have led up to the incident. Traffic investigators are working to determine the factors involved, including road conditions, visibility, and other potential elements that may have contributed to the crash.
Pedestrian safety continues to be an important topic in many communities, especially along busy roadways where foot traffic and vehicle traffic intersect. Safety experts often encourage pedestrians to cross streets at designated crosswalks whenever possible and urge drivers to remain alert, particularly at night when visibility may be reduced.
Local residents say areas with heavy traffic can sometimes pose challenges for pedestrians, especially older adults who may need more time to cross the street safely. Community leaders and transportation officials frequently review roadway safety measures to identify ways to reduce accidents and protect both drivers and pedestrians.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and authorities say additional information may be released as it becomes available.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information that could assist investigators is encouraged to contact local authorities.
