The Virginia State Police responded to the two-vehicle collision at approximately 3:48 p.m. on Aug. 18, which occurred on eastbound Dawn Boulevard, roughly 700 feet east of Winston Loop.
Authorities reported that the accident involved a 2013 Chrysler van and a 2015 Mack truck. Preliminary investigation revealed that the Chrysler van crossed the center line while traveling eastbound and collided head-on with the westbound truck. Following the impact, the van veered off the left side of the roadway and entered a wooded area, ultimately striking a tree. The severity of the crash caused fatal injuries to the van’s driver, identified as 46-year-old Alberio Samperio of the Annandale area in Fairfax County, and a pre-teen passenger seated in the front of the vehicle. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other juveniles who were riding in the back of the van sustained injuries and were airlifted by MedFlight to receive treatment. According to police, all occupants in the van were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, underscoring the violent nature of the collision. Fortunately, the driver of the Mack truck was unharmed in the incident.
Virginia State Police are leading the ongoing investigation with the support of the Division I Crash Reconstruction Team to determine the exact cause and contributing factors of the accident. Officials are examining aspects such as vehicle speed, road conditions, and potential mechanical issues, as well as interviewing witnesses and reviewing any available surveillance footage from the area.
