Alesia Ventura-Large, Nancy Pilsch Obituary, Death News – Two women from Massachusetts lost their lives after a camper exploded at a campground in Old Orchard Beach, Maine, over the weekend. The explosion occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Powder Horn Campground, located on Cascade Road.
Emergency responders from Old Orchard Beach Fire and EMS quickly arrived at the scene, where they discovered two women suffering from critical burn injuries. Both victims were transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland for treatment. Tragically, both women died from their injuries on Sunday.
Authorities identified the deceased as 58-year-old Alesia Ventura-Large of Marlborough, Massachusetts, and 58-year-old Nancy Pilsch of Leominster, Massachusetts.
Following the explosion, the fire that erupted was promptly brought under control. Given the serious nature of the incident, the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office was called in to investigate the cause of the explosion. Preliminary findings suggest that a leak of liquid propane gas had accumulated inside and underneath the camper. Investigators believe the gas ignited when one of the camper’s occupants lit a candle, triggering the explosion.
The Fire Marshal’s Office stated that a full investigation is ongoing. Part of their inquiry will involve a closer inspection of the camper’s gas systems. They will receive additional support from the Maine Solid Fuel Inspectors as they work to determine the exact cause of the leak and explosion.
No other injuries were reported, and officials have not released further details about whether other campers were nearby or affected. Campground officials have not made a public statement about the tragedy.
The incident has prompted safety reminders from officials about the risks associated with propane usage in recreational vehicles. Authorities are urging campers to have their gas systems regularly inspected and to avoid open flames in enclosed spaces where gas might be present.
As the investigation continues, the community of Old Orchard Beach, along with the families of the victims, are mourning the loss of the two women whose trip ended in tragedy.
