When deputies arrived, they discovered 29-year-old Ana Beatriz Santo Rodriguez lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pronounced her dead at the scene.
A short time later, a separate emergency call led Sweetwater Police to respond to a car crash at Southwest 107th Avenue and Southwest Third Street. There, they found 48-year-old Liev Canals in the driver’s seat of a black SUV, suffering from what authorities determined was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Canals was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. According to detectives, Canals and Rodriguez were in a romantic relationship.
Surveillance footage obtained by Local 10 News showed the couple in a physical and verbal altercation inside a vehicle. In the video, the two can be seen struggling before two gunshots are heard. Based on preliminary findings, law enforcement officials believe that Canals shot Rodriguez during the argument, removed her from the vehicle at a driveway along Northwest 127th Path, and fled the area. He later crashed his vehicle in Sweetwater, where he apparently took his own life.
