Authorities in Berkshire County are investigating a serious crash involving two tractor-trailers that resulted in the death of one driver earlier this week.

According to the Otis Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 9:09 a.m. on Thursday, March 5, to the 1300 block of South Main Road in Otis following reports of a two-vehicle collision.

When officers arrived, they located two tractor-trailers that had come to rest near the roadway in a snowbank—one positioned in the northbound lane and the other in the southbound lane. Emergency responders immediately began assisting the drivers involved.

Police identified one of the drivers as Antonio Marcucci, 32, of Waterbury. Authorities said he was inside the cab of the northbound tractor-trailer when responders arrived. He was transported to Baystate Medical Center by local emergency crews, where he was later pronounced dead.

Officials reported that the driver of the second tractor-trailer, which had Oklahoma registration plates, did not suffer serious injuries.

Preliminary findings from investigators, including review of dash-camera footage from one of the trucks, suggest that both vehicles were traveling in opposite directions along South Main Road prior to the crash. Authorities believe the northbound tractor-trailer lost control and crossed into the opposite lane before the collision occurred.

Several agencies responded to the scene, including the Otis Fire Department, Massachusetts State Police, the MSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, the MSP Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and detectives from the Berkshire State Police unit.

Officials say the crash remains under investigation as authorities continue reviewing evidence and the circumstances leading up to the incident.

As investigators work to determine the exact cause of the collision, the tragedy also raises an important question for many drivers: what more can be done to improve safety on busy highways and prevent similar crashes involving large commercial vehicles?
