Aspen Cheyenne Hadley – Authorities are investigating a fatal traffic incident that occurred Wednesday morning, January 28, on Highway 126 near Powell Butte. Oregon State Police confirmed that one person lost their life in the collision, while another individual was seriously injured and taken to a hospital for medical care.

According to officials, the crash happened shortly after 9 a.m. near milepost 7 on Highway 126, just east of the junction with Powell Butte Highway. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene following reports of a serious collision involving two vehicles traveling in opposite directions.

Preliminary findings from investigators indicate that a westbound Jeep Cherokee, driven by a 25-year-old woman from Bend, entered the opposing lane of traffic for reasons that remain under investigation. The vehicle then collided with an eastbound Freightliner box truck. The driver of the Jeep was identified as Aspen Cheyenne Hadley of Bend. Officials confirmed that she was pronounced dead at the scene. Law enforcement expressed condolences to her family and noted that next-of-kin notifications were handled according to protocol.

The driver of the box truck, identified as 35-year-old Leah Lynn Laforest of Redmond, sustained serious injuries in the collision. She was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials did not provide further details about her condition, citing privacy considerations.

Due to the severity of the incident and the need for a thorough on-scene investigation, Highway 126 was temporarily closed for approximately three hours. Traffic was diverted while law enforcement officers documented the scene, gathered evidence, and worked to safely reopen the roadway.
