PROGRESO, TEXAS — Authorities have identified the man who died following an officer-involved shooting Saturday night in Progreso. The incident remains under investigation, according to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO).
Officials said the incident occurred on Encino Street late Saturday evening. Deputies with the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area at the request of Progreso police after a reported disturbance.
When deputies arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency responders provided assistance, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities confirmed. He was later identified as a 46-year-old Progreso resident. His name was released following standard notification procedures.
According to investigators, witnesses told authorities that Progreso police had been called to the area for a report involving a man allegedly armed with a machete. Police officers responded to assess the situation and make contact.
In a press release, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office stated that an officer encountered the man and that a physical struggle followed. During that encounter, the officer discharged his service weapon, resulting in fatal injuries to the man.
Authorities said the officer involved in the incident was also injured during the struggle. The officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.
On Tuesday, HCSO Public Information Officer Jena Palacios confirmed that the officer has since been released from the hospital. Officials said the officer is one of four patrol officers currently serving with the Progreso Police Department.
The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office is overseeing the investigation, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence, review witness statements, and examine all available information to determine the full sequence of events.
