According to a news release from the military base, the incident began near the Truman Gate entrance around 2 a.m. when security personnel attempted to detain Teel-Scott. He fled the scene, leading to an “off-base pursuit,” which ultimately resulted in a shooting. Authorities confirmed that Teel-Scott died at the scene, while another airman suffered a gunshot wound to the hand.
Teel-Scott was a member of the 377th Security Forces Squadron, the unit responsible for protecting Kirtland Air Force Base. Military officials have not disclosed further details about what led to the confrontation or who fired the fatal shot, citing an ongoing investigation.
Linda Card, an Air Force spokesperson based in Quantico, Virginia, told USA TODAY on Monday that there was no threat to the public. However, she declined to provide additional information regarding the circumstances of the shooting, emphasizing that the case remains under investigation.
The second airman, who sustained a non-life-threatening hand injury, was taken to a hospital for medical treatment and later released. Officials have not disclosed his identity or role in the incident.

Col.
