Carolyn Sanger Obituary, Death – A woman tragically fell to her death while hiking with her three teenage children at Purgatory Chasm State Reservation in Massachusetts on Wednesday afternoon, as reported by the police. Shortly after 2 p.m., Massachusetts State Police responded to reports of the fall.
The victim was declared dead at the scene, with aerial footage from WCVB showing rescue teams with a stretcher positioned below the cliff. Sutton Police Chief Tom Calouro confirmed that the deceased was a 49-year-old mother of four who fell approximately 50 to 75 feet from the cliff. ‘It is a tragedy that a 49-year-old mother from Topsfield fell in the chasm today.

Her husband, Michael Sanger, described her as ‘an amazing, amazing human,’ noting that she brought brightness to many people’s lives. The couple was preparing to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary in September, having met in college. On Thursday evening, Michael spoke to WCVB while wearing one of his wife’s shirts, cherishing their shared love.
‘The kids and I have been reminiscing about her, printing pictures, and sharing stories,’ he remarked. ‘Her physical absence does not equate to her being gone.’ Carrie’s legacy continues in the community as a dedicated oncology nurse, and she had recently fulfilled her dream of opening a wellness center. A GoFundMe campaign has been established for the family, raising over $90,000 by Friday morning. Sutton police have stated that the fall was accidental, and the incident is currently under investigation.
Purgatory Chasm State Reservation, situated about 20 miles south of Worcester, is managed by the state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation and features a 1/4-mile-long chasm formed by ancient glacial activity, characterized by 75-foot-high granite walls and cliffs.
