Officials publicly identified the victim as Charles Crowe Jr., a resident of Sherrills Ford. The incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, June 14, near the Lake Norman Picnic Ground in Iredell County.

Emergency services were alerted at approximately 5:55 p.m. after reports of a person in distress in the water. Upon arrival, lake patrol units discovered a woman struggling to stay afloat. Rescue crews quickly pulled her from the water and transported her to the nearest dock for medical assistance.

The woman informed deputies that she and Crowe had been out boating when he entered the water and appeared to suffer from a medical emergency. Realizing he was in trouble, she jumped in to try to help him. However, despite her efforts, she was unable to locate or rescue him.

Search and rescue teams began a coordinated effort to locate Crowe in the water. However, deteriorating weather conditions forced them to call off operations at approximately 9:45 p.m. that same evening.

The search resumed the following morning on Sunday, June 15. After continued efforts, crews were able to locate and recover Crowe’s body.

Officials have not yet released further details about the exact medical issue Crowe may have experienced or whether any foul play is suspected. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the drowning.
