CHICAGO — Authorities are investigating a police-involved shooting that occurred Monday evening in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood following a pursuit involving a vehicle linked to an earlier incident.
According to the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), the vehicle involved had been identified earlier in the day as being connected to a shooting on the Eisenhower Expressway. Officials reported that no injuries were associated with that earlier incident, although traffic on the expressway was disrupted during the afternoon rush hour.
COPA said officers later located the white Mercedes in the 800 block of North Homan Avenue at around 5:30 p.m. An unmarked police vehicle attempted to approach the driver at that time. Authorities said the vehicle drove away, striking a pedestrian who was in a crosswalk as it fled the area. The pedestrian’s condition has not been publicly detailed.
Police followed the vehicle through nearby streets and into an alley, where investigators say it eventually collided with a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) bus. Officials also reported that the vehicle struck an unmarked Chicago Police Department squad car during the incident.
Video recorded by witnesses and shared with local media outlets showed officers at the scene with their weapons drawn during the confrontation. According to COPA, the vehicle then reversed and moved in the direction of the bus. During that moment, an officer discharged their weapon, striking the driver.
The driver was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died. Authorities have not yet released the individual’s identity. Officials also confirmed that a weapon was recovered at the scene. Two Chicago police officers involved in the incident were taken to a hospital and were reported to be in good condition.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which is standard procedure in police-involved incidents in Chicago. Investigators will review evidence, including video footage and witness accounts, to determine the sequence of events.
Officials are asking anyone who may have additional information or video footage related to the incident to contact COPA . As investigations continue, incidents like this often raise questions about public safety, police response, and community awareness.
