Colin Feltis Obituary, Death – Authorities in Donna, Texas, are continuing to investigate a tragic two-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a 16-year-old and left two others hospitalized earlier this week. The Donna Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that the collision occurred on Tuesday evening along the westbound lanes of the expressway.
On Wednesday, officials with the South Texas Independent School District (ISD) identified the young victim as Colin Feltis, a student at the South Texas ISD Science Academy. The school district released a heartfelt statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss and announced that grief counselors would be available to help students and staff cope during this difficult time.
“Our hearts are with Colin’s family, friends, and everyone impacted by this tragedy,” the district shared in a post on social media. “This is not only a great loss for his loved ones but for our entire South Texas ISD community. In moments like this, it is vital that we come together as a family to support and comfort one another.”
According to a preliminary report from the Donna Police Department, the crash occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday on the expressway between Hutto Road and Main Street. Investigators said that a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado collided with the back of a 2019 Chevrolet Cruze traveling ahead of it in the westbound lanes.
Inside the Chevrolet Cruze were three occupants, including the 16-year-old student. Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene and provided aid before transporting all three individuals to a nearby hospital. Despite efforts by medical staff, the teen succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities have not released the current conditions of the two other passengers from the Cruze. Additionally, investigators have not yet said whether the driver of the Silverado will face any charges as the inquiry continues. Police and state officials are working together to analyze the evidence, review roadway footage, and speak with witnesses to determine the cause of the crash.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) are also assisting with the investigation. As part of that effort, TxDOT announced temporary road closures on the expressway to allow investigators to complete their work safely.
The westbound lanes of the expressway between the Main Street ramp and Main Street exit will be closed on Thursday, October 23, from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition, the three westbound lanes of the frontage road before the Main Street ramp will also be temporarily shut down. TxDOT has advised drivers to plan ahead and take alternate routes during that time to avoid congestion.
The crash has deeply affected the Donna community and the South Texas ISD family. Friends, classmates, and teachers have expressed their condolences online, remembering Colin as a bright, kind-hearted student who had a passion for learning and a positive spirit that inspired others.
“Our community is heartbroken,” one classmate shared. “Colin was such a good person—always smiling, always willing to help others. It’s so hard to believe he’s gone.”
Local residents have also shared messages of support for the families of all those involved, as well as gratitude for the first responders who arrived quickly to assist at the scene.
As the investigation continues, authorities are reminding drivers to remain alert, follow speed limits, and maintain safe distances from other vehicles, especially along busy expressways where sudden slowdowns can lead to rear-end collisions.
Donna Police officials have not indicated when additional updates will be released but confirmed that the case remains active. Both the police department and TxDOT expressed appreciation to the public for their patience and cooperation during the temporary closures.
