Authorities are investigating a fatal multi-vehicle crash that occurred Friday evening in Bowie County. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, troopers responded around 8 p.m. on March 6 to a collision on U.S. Highway 82 west of De Kalb involving several vehicles.

Preliminary reports indicate that a white 2000 Toyota Corolla was traveling westbound on the highway when, for reasons that remain under investigation, the vehicle crossed out of its lane and entered oncoming traffic. Officials say the car then collided with multiple vehicles traveling in the opposite direction.

Authorities identified the driver of the Toyota as 70-year-old Connie Stevens of Avery. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to investigators.

Emergency responders also treated others involved in the crash. Officials said two additional drivers sustained injuries, and a child who was a passenger in one of the vehicles was also hurt. All three were transported to a nearby hospital for medical care. Their conditions have not been publicly released.

Troopers remained at the scene for some time as they worked to investigate the crash and clear the roadway. Officials say the investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to review the circumstances that led to the collision.

Serious crashes on rural highways often raise concerns about road safety, traffic awareness, and driver vigilance. Authorities frequently remind motorists to remain attentive, maintain safe speeds, and stay alert for unexpected roadway conditions.

As investigators continue to examine what happened, the tragic incident highlights the risks drivers face on busy highways.

With the investigation still underway, many in the community are asking: what steps can drivers and local officials take to reduce the risk of serious crashes and make highways safer for everyone?
