Cynthia Hansen, Whiteville Fitness Center Owner Dies After Early Morning Assault – What Can Communities Do to Improve Public Safety?

Authorities in Whiteville have identified the woman who died following an early morning assault at a local fitness center on Wednesday.

According to the Whiteville Police Department, officers responded to a call at around 5:30 a.m. reporting that a woman had been assaulted at Stronger Body Fitness, located at 711 N. Johnson Street. When officers arrived, they found the victim conscious at the scene. Emergency responders transported the woman to Columbus Regional Hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, she was later pronounced dead.

Police later identified the victim as 71-year-old Cynthia Hansen, the owner of Stronger Body Fitness. Community members and officials say Hansen was a well-known figure in the area who had built strong relationships with many of her clients over the years.

Whiteville Police Chief Paul Rockenbach described Hansen as an important part of the community, noting that she was widely respected by those who knew her. The fitness center she operated served many residents who visited regularly, making the loss especially difficult for clients, friends, and neighbors.

Following the incident, a portion of North Johnson Street and East Smith Street was closed for several hours while investigators examined the scene and gathered evidence.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has joined the Whiteville Police Department in the investigation. Agents were seen searching for evidence along East Smith Street and in an area near the fitness center. The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene, including the deployment of a K-9 unit.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, and police have not released details regarding possible suspects at this time. Investigators are continuing to review evidence and follow leads to determine exactly what occurred. Police are asking anyone who may have information that could assist the investigation to contact the Whiteville Police Department.
