Daniel Anthony Smith Obituary, Death News – Authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a man whose body was discovered in a McKeesport cemetery last week. The case remains under active investigation by Allegheny County homicide detectives.
The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Daniel Anthony Smith of Duquesne. According to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office, Smith was pronounced dead at the scene on February 17. His body was found in the 1600 block of 5th Avenue inside the McKeesport and Versailles Cemetery.
Police were alerted to the scene after a passerby walking through the cemetery spotted Smith’s body around 10:44 a.m. and immediately called 911. Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 captured footage of the police response, showing officers actively working at the cemetery on the day of the discovery.
Investigators believe Smith was not shot at the cemetery but was instead killed elsewhere before his body was placed in the location where it was found. Lt. Venerando Costa of the Allegheny County Police Department stated that detectives are actively following leads to determine the exact location of the shooting and the circumstances surrounding Smith’s death.
“Detectives are still working, following up on some leads to see if we can place where it actually occurred or what happened,” Costa said. He also noted that there are no security cameras inside the cemetery, which has complicated the investigation.
Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward. The Allegheny County Police Department has set up a tip line at 833-ALL-TIPS, where anonymous tips will also be accepted.
The discovery of Smith’s body has left the community searching for answers, and police continue their efforts to piece together what happened in the hours leading up to his death.
