Darnell Haynes Obituary, Death – Four teenagers were shot — one fatally — during an unauthorized block party on Cleveland’s southeast side Saturday night, according to police. The Cleveland Division of Police said officers responded just before midnight on July 19 to reports of multiple gunshots in the 16400 block of Highview Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered two of the victims: a 17-year-old girl who had been grazed by a bullet and a 15-year-old boy who was found lying in the street with a gunshot wound.
Emergency personnel transported both teens to the hospital. The girl was listed in stable condition. The boy, however, was later pronounced dead at the hospital. He was identified by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office as Darnell Haynes, a 15-year-old from Cleveland Heights.
Further investigation revealed two additional victims had also been shot during the incident — a 17-year-old male and an 18-year-old female. Both had been taken to the hospital in private vehicles before police arrived. Their conditions were not immediately disclosed.
Police said that the shooting occurred during what they described as “an unpermitted block party.” The gathering, which had not been authorized or officially organized, drew a large crowd to the neighborhood. A spokesperson for the Cleveland Police confirmed to FOX 8 News that the event had not been sanctioned by city officials.
Authorities have not yet provided details regarding the motive or potential suspects involved in the shooting. No arrests had been made as of the latest reports.
The Cleveland Police Homicide Unit is now leading the investigation. Detectives are working to piece together what led to the violence, speaking with witnesses, collecting evidence, and reviewing any available surveillance footage from the area.
Residents in the neighborhood described a chaotic scene as gunfire erupted and people began fleeing the area. Several social media posts referenced a large crowd, panic, and a heavy police response following the shooting.
Law enforcement officials are urging anyone with information about the incident or those who were present at the block party to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
This tragedy adds to the growing concerns about youth violence and unauthorized gatherings in the city during the summer months. City leaders have repeatedly urged residents to refrain from organizing or attending unsanctioned events, especially those that can quickly grow beyond the control of organizers or law enforcement.
As of now, the case remains open and under active investigation. Police have not released additional details about potential suspects or what may have sparked the violence. The community continues to mourn the loss of 15-year-old Darnell Haynes, whose life was cut short during what was expected to be a night of summer celebration.
